It is important to protect yourself from the sun’s harmful rays at all times, even when playing in cloudy overcast weather.  Here are some recommendations on what products protect sensitive skin and lips.

Sun Protection for Sensitive Skin

If you have sensitive skin, finding a sunscreen that’s suitable for your active lifestyle and skin type can be a challenge. Thick, greasy lotions may trigger an acne breakout. Fragrances, alcohol and chemical sun blockers might cause allergic reactions and aggravate the skin.

To avoid such reactions on your skin, here is a checklist of types of things you should to look for in a sports sunscreen:

  • UVA and UVB Protection
  • SPF30+
  • Water Resistance
  • Sweat Resistance
  • Oil fee
  • PABA free
  • Long Lasting Protection (e.g. 4 hours)
  • Non-comedogenic (won’t clog pores)
  • Natural physical sun blockers for example zinc oxide

Based on the above factors I chose to trial Neutrogena® Sport Face. My skin is very sensitive and susceptible to break outs. I’ve tried many lotions over the years but I’ve been surprised by the performance of this product. It has a really clean feel (its not greasy – for once this claim is true of a suncreen) and it doesn’t sting my skin when I perspire.

Just be conscious of wiping your face either during the game or at quarter time because you will run the risk of wiping off your sunscreen. Instead of wiping my face I lightly dabbed my face with a tissue just to remove some of the sweat.  Applying it at least 30 minutes prior to sun exposure and remembering to reapply periodically will ensured complete protection.

Sun Protection for Lips

Our lips are no exception. Interestingly they need more protection than other parts of your body, in fact, licking lips can be more detrimental than helpful, since saliva acts like a lens to intensify sun exposure.

As a result, it’s important to moisturise and regularly protect your lips. Here is a checklist of types of things you should to look for in a sports lip balm:

  • Broad spectrum UVA+UVB protection
  • Enhanced UVA protection with zinc oxide
  • 2, 3 and 4 hours water resistant

Of the ones I have tried, I personally prefer Blistex Ultra SPF 30+ lip care or Blistex Daily Conditioner.  My lips were very chapped (badly affected by the sun and wind) and immediately after applying this lip balm I always feel a light conditioning sensation.  The condition of my lips has improved a lot.  Even though the Blistex Ultra is water resistant for at least 80 minutes, at quarter time I reapplied before returning to the court because some of the balm comes off onto my drink bottle.

Everyone’s skin types are different so it’s important to find a brand that is suited to your skin and apply it regularly for adequate protection against the elements.
